EXAM I: STANDARD WRITTEN EXAMINATION
200 Total Questions, but only 175 are scored
123 Correct is minimum score to PASS – recently revised in 2012
Exam I is 200 individual mini-vignettes followed by one question with four answer-choices.
The most-important content skill component is Initial Assessment – ability to read the vignette and make a clinical judgment after one or two sessions.
The most-important process skill component is the Quick Answer Scan – ability to quickly review the answer-choices, eliminate the Stinker and the Allure, and discern the best-choice between the remaining two “vanilla” answers.
EXAM II: CLINICAL VIGNETTE EXAM
40 Total Questions, but only 30 are scored
20 Correct is minimum score to PASS
Exam II is two vignettes followed by 7 questions each, two vignettes followed by 6 questions each, two vignettes followed by 5 questions each, and one vignette followed by 4 questions.
KEY SKILLS AND SCHEMAS FOR PASSING THE CA MFT EXAMS:
The most-important content skill component is Initial Assessment – ability to read the vignette and make a clinical judgment after one or two sessions.
A second important content skill competent is the Key Elements Scan, looking for key symptoms, time-frames, terminology, and legal or ethical challenges.
The most-important process skill component is the Quick Answer Scan, and also preparing for the probable components of questions following each vignette: Initial Assessment, Provisional Diagnoses, Case Management, Treatment Planning, Interventions based on a Given Theoretical Approach, Legal Considerations, and Ethical Considerations.
